Preparatory Course for Admission to Government Schools (P2 – P5, S1 – S3)

The objective of the course is to prepare international students to excel at the Admissions Exercise for International Students (AEIS) examination conducted by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Singapore.

Course Objective

    The objective of the course is to prepare international students to excel at the Admissions Exercise for International Students (AEIS) examination conducted by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Singapore. AEIS is a centralised admissions exercise conducted by MOE for international students who intend to enter a Singapore Government School. The course component modules focus on English and Mathematics as the AEIS aims to assess the student’s English literacy, numeracy and reasoning abilities.

Course Outcome

  • Attain a strong foundation in English at the targeted level.

  • Attain a strong foundation in Mathematics at the targeted level.

  • Able to relate comfortably to the local school context and racial mix.

  • Able to appreciate the different races and cultures in Singapore

  • Able to have a certain level of self-efficacy in taking responsibility in learning

      Twenty-four (24) weeks (5 days a week, 6 hours per day)

Course Modules and Outline

    English

    The Learning Outcomes:

    • listen to, read and view with understanding, accuracy and critical appreciation, a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts from print, non-print and electronic sources.
    • speak, write and make presentations in internationally acceptable English that is grammatical, fluent and appropriate for purpose, audience, context and culture. At higher levels of proficiency, pupils will speak and write for academic purposes and creative expression, using language that is inventive and imaginative.
    • think through, interpret and evaluate fiction and non-fiction texts from print and electronic sources to analyse how language is used to evoke responses and construct meaning; how information is presented; and how different modes of presentation create impact.
    • interact effectively in English with people from their own or different cultures.


    Mathematics

    The Learning Outcomes:

    • acquire the necessary mathematical concepts and skills for everyday life, and for continuous learning in mathematics and related disciplines.
    • Develop the necessary process skills for the acquisition and application of mathematical concepts and skills.
    • Develop the mathematical thinking and problem solving skills and apply these skills to formulate and solve problems.
    • Recognize and use connections among mathematical ideas, and between mathematics and other disciplines.
    • Develop positive attitudes towards mathematics.
    • Make effective use of a variety of mathematical tools (including information and communication technology tools) in the learning and application of mathematics.
    • Produce imaginative and creative work arising from mathematical ideas.
    • Develop the abilities to reason logically, to communicate mathematically, and to learn cooperatively and independently.

    Upon achieving the requirements at the end of the course, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.

Course Assessment

    Assessment Modes

    Description

    Daily Performance Grade – 20%

    This special grade is used to measure the performance of the student in class. It represents “how well” the student has pursued his or her individual learning and contains holistic measures.

    Continual Assessment – 50%

    These are periodical tests and assignments given to students to ensure that progress is made consistently during the course and is a valuable indicator of progressive academic outcomes.

    Final Assessment – 20%

    This is the final assessment that is conducted for students. For students sitting for external examinations (i.e. AEIS and S-AEIS), this serves as a valuable final preparation.

    Projects – 10%

    This is a valuable tool used to ensure that there is an element of collaborative learning to enhance communication and social skills.
